Transfer to the Holy See

Vatican CityHistory

In 1983, legal ownership of the Shroud was transferred to the Holy See, following the provisions of the Savoy family bequest. The formal deed was signed in the Vatican in October, while the Shroud remained in Turin under local custodianship.

Historical Significance

This transfer separated legal ownership from local care, placing the Shroud under the Holy See while preserving its historical location and custodial administration in Turin.
