2002 Conservation and Restoration
In 2002, the custodians of the Shroud undertook a major conservation and restoration effort. The 1534 backing cloth was removed, and a new backing was attached to stabilize the Shroud.
Documented Changes
The work produced a new photographic record and documented material features that had previously been obscured by the backing. The restoration remains significant because it permanently altered the physical configuration of the Shroud while creating new data for analysis.
